Memoryhouse is the 2002 debut album by neo-classical composer Max Richter. Originally released in 2002 under the Late Junction label, the album was reissued by FatCat Records in 2009 and 2014 with alternative album artwork. The new reissue of German-born composer Max Richter's Memoryhouse serves as a jolting reminder of just how much classical music has broken outside of its shell and into other realms during the last decade. In January, the German-born composer Max Richter completed a task that had long felt like a dream: He heard the music of Memoryhouse, his first album under his own name, played in front of an audience in a proper auditorium. Memoryhouse may be Max Richter's debut album, but he had been developing his unique mix of contemporary classical and electronics for years before it was released. He co-founded the Piano Circus ensemble, who commissioned and performed works by Arvo Pärt, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich all of whom were influential on Richter's own music, and used live sampling. He also collaborated with Roni Size and Future Sound of London on their groundbreaking 1996 album Dead Cities. Portrait: Max Richter - Angèle Dubeau, La Pietà. This is a remarkable album, but it seems (to my ears at least) to have been mastered poorly. There are some parts that are so quiet that I can barely hear them, at which point I turn up the volume. Then, then come the parts that are blaring, and since you've already turned up your speakers to hear the soft parts, it's almost painful.

It seems that sensible adjustment of the levels during the mastering process could have avoided this problem altogether. As a result, a great set of pieces that I don't listen to as much as I'd like or as much as the music deserves.

Has anybody else had the same experience with this recording? Are other versions any better?
