The Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125, is a choral symphony, the final complete symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven, composed between 1822 and 1824. It was first performed in Vienna on 7 May 1824. The symphony is regarded by many critics and musicologists as Beethoven's greatest work and one of the supreme achievements in the history of music. One of the best-known works in common practice music, it stands as one of the most performed symphonies in the world. Herbert von Karajan recorded Ludwig van Beethoven's complete symphonies four times, first in the 1950s with the Philharmonia Orchestra on EMI, then on three more occasions with the Berlin Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon. Karajan's 1963 cycle with Berlin is highly regarded by fans for its consistent interpretations and energetic and emotional playing. The Hague Philharmonic Orchestra. Willem van Otterloo. Composer: Ludwig van Beethoven. Audio CD May 11, 2004. When it comes to the interpretation of Beethoven's music, I have always turned to Leonard Bernstein since he himself said that he had a transcendental connection to Beethoven. Few of us who have followed his career would argue with that statement
