The River/The Life is the 1999 release from Japanese progressive/melodic rock act Air Pavilion. I believe it’s their third album overall, but I haven’t been able to unearth much information about this band. The main songwriters and musicians in Air Pavilion are Japanese, but they recruited former Hurricane (and current Foreigner) frontman Kelly Hansen to provide vocals.

The River/The Life is a conceptual album that is vaguely reminiscent of Saga and Dare. It’s not full-on prog, but there are progressive elements, particularly with respect to the keyboard solos. Hansen does a decent job, but it’s not his best moment. He sounds really restrained here, not cutting loose like he’s capable of.

I’m not really blown away by this one. It’s interesting enough, but unless you’re a serious Kelly Hansen fan (and by serious I mean willing to pay big bucks on a Japan-only import), The River/The Life is probably not worth hunting down.
